"The Tyranny of Oil"
The Tyranny of Oil Antonia Juhasz talked about her book The Tyranny of Oil: The World’s Most Powerful Industry – And What We Must Do to Stop It (William Morrow; October 7, 2008). She argues that the oil industry today has as much power as Standard Oil had in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and says that with this power these companies have been able to manipulate the price of oil while keeping their role largely hidden from public view. She believes that five or six of the largest oil companies today need to be broken up the way Standard Oil was in 1911 and that there should be significant regulation of the oil markets. The author responded to questions from the audience following her remarks.
Antonia Juhasz is an associate fellow with the Institute for Policy Studies, a fellow with Oil Change International, and a senior analyst for Foreign Policy In Focus. She is the author of The Bush Agenda: Invading the World, One Economy at a Time.
