Winter Soldier Conference: March 13-16, 2008

Thursday, March 13th 2008
Washington, DC

Following the groundbreaking path laid by Vietnam Veterans Against the War nearly forty years ago, Winter Soldier will present a series of veteran and soldier testimonials and ally panels that seek to expose the policies, set at the highest levels of the military and government, that are creating the brutal realities on the ground. We intend to show that the officials who craft, approve, and enforce our foreign policy in Iraq and Afghanistan bear the ultimate responsibility for the senseless loss of life, liberty, and property in those countries. As men and women who have experienced these occupations first-hand, we have a duty to share the truth about what troops, civilians, and veterans experience, both on the battlefield and upon returning home.

Antonia will speak on Panel 3: “Corporate Pillaging and Military Contractors” (2 – 3:30 PM, March 14)

The ubiquitous presence of corporations taking on roles historically reserved for military personnel presents a new challenge. More than any other time in American history, contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan are privatizing war and blurring the lines of accountability. This panel will cover how and what they’ve done in the past five years.

Objectives: Convey the enormity of the problem in terms of dollars spent, corruption in awarding contracts, and lack of government oversight in the process. Provide concrete examples of companies that are operating in Iraq and Afghanistan and the problems they cause.
