PeaceFest 2006
Saturday, September 23rd 2006 12-5
Iowa City, IA
From the Peacefest Iowa website:
“The first PeaceFest was held in Hubbard Park in Iowa City on September 11, 2005. We chose that date to symbolically reclaim it from those who exploited it for political purposes, in order to wage the so called “war on terror.” We recognized that the “war on terror” (including the Iraq War) was launched by using the cover of 9/11 as a front for expanding US power over the oil- and natural gas-rich Middle East.
Last year’s event was planned by members of two local organizations – the University of Iowa Antiwar Committee and the War Resisters League, Iowa City chapter – along with several other community members and other groups.
Unfortunately, the US-led occupation of Iraq continues, and the recent Israeli invasion of Lebanon – with US assistance – threatens to throw the entire region into war. And, in elite policy-making circles, the drumbeat calling for an attack on Iran is getting louder by the day. Hence the need for another Peacefest.
This year’s organizing committee is made up of community members and representatives of various local organizations. We run our meetings democratically so that everyone’s ideas can be considered, and we rotate meeting facilitators. Most of the grunt work gets done in committees, which usually meet weekly as well.
We don’t care if you have any prior organizing experience or not – if you endorse the guiding principles of PeaceFest (found on the home page), please consider joining us at a meeting. Send us an email at peacefestiowa@riseup.net and we’ll let you know when and where our next meeting is.”
