Iraq Oil Privatization Briefing: Iraq Supplemental Blackmails Iraq into Privatizing Its Oil

Thursday, May 24th 2007  2 PM

Antonia will speak at a Kucinich-sponsored Congressional Briefing on the Iraqi Oil Law (Hydrocarbon Act).

Dear Colleague, You are invited to attend a briefing on the consequences of the Iraq Supplemental bill which provides for the privatization of Iraqi oil. The benchmarks in the war supplemental force the Iraqis to privatize their oil industry by demanding passage of the Iraqi “Hydrocarbon Act.” Except for three scant lines, the entire 33 page “Hydrocarbon Act,” is about creating a complex legal structure to facilitate the privatization of Iraqi oil. This act would allow multinational oil corporations — many based in the United States — to exercise control over Iraqi oil. As such, it is imperative that all of us carefully read the Iraqi Parliament’s bill because the Congress is on the record as promoting oil privatization. Iraqi oil expert Antonia Juhasz of the Institute for Policy Studies will be discussing the implications of insisting on benchmarks in the Iraq supplemental that include passage of the Iraqi “Hydrocarbon Act.” Read Antonia Juhasz New York Times Op Ed of March 13, 2007 exposing the details of the Iraq Oil Law and the oil benchmark, “Whose Oil Is It, Anyway?” http://www.bushagenda.net/article.php?id=369. The briefing will be held on Thursday, May 24 from 2 p.m.-3 p.m., in room 402 Cannon. I hope you will attend.
