Restoring the Gulf Coast: Voices from the Front Lines

The Gulf oil disaster was the biggest news story of 2010 and the biggest oil catastrophe in America’s history. BP’s oil is still in the Gulf, and it continues to have real impacts on real people. Hurricane Katrina was our nation’s first taste of climate chaos, and the event has continued to shape the lives of citizens in the Gulf. As we work to transition our nation and planet to a clean energy economy, the experiences and voices of Gulf Coast citizens will be essential to the discussion. This plenary discussion features some of the most powerful voices that have been working in the Gulf. Two of the presenters have just completed walking to DC (The Road to Washington — Walk the Walk) to draw attention to the plight of the Gulf Coast, and one of them will deliver his message in a song.

Panelists:
Derrick Evans, Turkey Creek Community Initiatives
Aaron Viles, Gulf Restoration Network
Antonia Juhasz, Global Exchange
Cherri Foytlin, The Road to Washington — Walk the Walk
Drew Landry, Gulf musician

“At Power Shift 2011, over 10,000 young leaders will converge on Washington, DC to stand up for our future. We’ll stand together to reclaim our democracy from big corporations and push our nation to move beyond dirty energy sources that are harming the health of people and the planet.”

Powershift is sponsored by the Energy Action Coalition, a coalition of 50 youth-led environmental and social justice groups working together to build the youth clean energy and climate movement. Working with hundreds of campus and youth groups, dozens of youth networks, and hundreds of thousands of young people, Energy Action Coalition and its partners have united a burgeoning movement behind winning local victories and coordinating on state, regional, and national levels in the United States and Canada.
