Community forum and update on Valero’s crude by rail project in Benicia.

This is a community event to discuss the dangerous crude by rail project proposed by Valero in Benicia, how it affects the Bay Area and the entire state, and ways to organize to fight it. We will also be providing an update on the status of the Draft Environmental Impact Report related to Valero’s proposed project. This event is sponsored by Benicians for a Safe and Healthy Community (“BSHC”).

SPEAKERS:

DIANE BAILEY:
Ms. Bailey is a Senior Scientist in the health and environment program at Natural Resources Defense Council for nine years promoting the reduction of diesel exhaust, air toxics, and global warming pollution. Her work has focused on hotspots of air pollution created by goods movement facilities and other major sources. She has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Washington University and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Rice University. Website: nrdc.org/about/staff/diane-bailey

ANTONIA JUHASZ:
Ms. Juhasz is an oil and energy analyst, author and investigative journalist. She is the author of three books: Black Tide (2011), The Tyranny of Oil (2008), and The Bush Agenda (2006). An award winning writer, her work has appeared in numerous publications, including Rolling Stone, The Advocate, The Atlantic, CNN.com, New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Los Angeles Times, The Nation and Alternet.org. She is currently writing a feature article for Harper’s Magazine based on her journey in a submarine to the site of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Juhasz was a 2012-2013 Investigative Journalism Fellow at the Investigative Reporting Program at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. She holds a Masters Degree in Public Policy from Georgetown University and a Bachelors Degree in Public Policy from Brown University.

Ms. Bardet is a local activist, longtime refinery watchdog, and a member of Benicians For a Safe and Healthy Community

ANDRES SOTO:
Mr. Soto is a KPFA radio host and advocate for social justice who, for more than 30 years, has engaged in struggles for civil rights, educational rights, immigrants rights and environmental justice. He is currently working with several groups in the East Bay Area to include Communities for a Better Environment and BSHC.
